I have tested the newly release free openvpn client (see on the app store) for iphone/ipod touch and it is 100% compatible with RMerlin openvpn server for asus router. So if you configure your openvpn server on your router with the option "Direct clients to redirect Internet traffic", you could do safe browsing in public hotspot through wifi with an ipod touch/iphone using a vpn tunnel. The process to setup is very similar than using a windows client, using the exact same certificates and config file has for a windows client. You can use itunes to download all the file (certificates and config) and the config file to ios openvpn client. I tested this under ios 5.1.1
If you are using a password protected client certificate, the application will add a small box where you can type the password before attempting the connection with the server.
The server is setup in tun mode in my case.
