OpenVPN Client on Asus AC-RT86U stopped working

Hi, I have an ASUS AC-RT86U that I have configured with an OpenVPN client connection to NordVPN. This was working last week but sometime this week it stopped working and nothing I do can get it working again. Some config details:
- running stock Asus firmware, v 3.0.0.4.384_32799
- this is a 2nd router, connected via WAN port to my netgear orbi mesh system
- it is double NATed which had not been a problem until this week
- I have done full factory reset, deleted openvpn config and reuploaded, pointed to different NordVPN server

Here are the logs regarding the connection:

One interesting note is that for some reason the router also can't check for newer firmwares, it constantly says it's not connected even though it is. Connected clients can access external sites, etc. with no problem and the router UI says it has a valid IP and that ethernet WAN is connected.

I have the same problem now with mine... RT-AC1900P .. upgraded firmware and now it is behaving worst ... maybe will do factory reset and install latest firmware again .. works for a bit, then when I try to connect, it just stays stuck in a loop ... arggh

I am using their asus ddns by the way.. worked for months before then I noticed it took more time to connect so they recommend upgrading my firmware.
