I have a Asus AC68RU running latest 380.65_beta3

I have uploaded openvpn client file and it connects fine. My IP changes as well so no issues here.

My question is that is it possible to have 5GHz running on openVPN while wired and 2.4GHz running without openvpn configuration?

Yes, it is! Policy Routing is your friend...

To clarify, Policy Routing and split tunneling in the tutorial is applicable only to Merlin FW and NOT stock Asus FW?
