Openvpn on RT-N66U (factory firmware)

New Around Here
I have recently setup the openvpn client function on factory firmware for RT-N66U. Previously with the openvpn client running on my laptop, i get speed of around 15 - 20 Mbps. With the openvpn client on RT-N66U, the speed drops to only 4 - 5 Mbps. Is this drastic drop normal? Or am i doing something wrong?

Will other firmwares like DD-WRT or Merlin improve the speed for openvpn?

You are hardware constrained. Compare the processor speed and RAM in your laptop to the router.

While Merlin's tweaks may help some I would suspect that the improvement would be minimal. Upgrading your router to one with a more powerful processor would help more but you still won't get the speeds you are getting on your laptop.

Thanks for the explanation. I expected a drop but didn't think it will be 70% lower than what i get off the laptop.

If flashing to another firmware won't help then i don't think i will experiment further. I am thinking about getting a cheap atom tablet for this purpose, do you know if the atom chip supports hostnetwork with decent speed ouput?
