Outside attempts to log in to my router

I recently setup the openvpn server on my RT-AC3200 so I can access my network remotely. Shortly after I started noticing several attempts per day from IP's in China trying to login to my VPN. All attempts fail with a time out which is good, but prior to setting up the VPN I never had a logged hack attempt in the routers log.

Is there something about the VPN server that alerts hackers to its existence on my router?

Anything more I should be doing to protect my system? My setup requires a usernme/password as well as the openvpn certificate to log in.

No, that's normal. All "standard" ports (SSH, FTP, HTTP, VPN, RDP, etc.) are constantly being scanned. You never had a "logged hack attempt" before because presumably you'd never opened up access to your router before?
