ping request time-out over WAN

R0tten

New Around Here
I just spent 3 hours trying to figure out why my ping requests to my public IP address were timing out over WAN yet successful over LAN. Well..... I narrowed it down to the WAN - DMZ setting being configured! While it makes sense as explained in the description of this setting... I don't recall DMZ working to redirect everything to that specified IP.

I thought the DMZ setting was to allow traffic from all outside ports to the specified IP?? Is this by design? How can I set my gaming computer with DMZ while still having the router reply to ping requests?

Make sure you have "Respond ICMP Echo (ping) Request from WAN" under Firewall > General set to Yes. Then add a port forward to the router's LAN IP, specify protocol "OTHER", and protocol number 1 (which is ICMP).

See if that helps.

Yes this is by design. So it is the firewall on your PC that is not responding to the external ping request. You'd have to change the Scope/Remote IP address of Windows Firewall rule from Local subnet to Any. Or create another port forward rule to a different client as mentioned above, or not use the DMZ at all but use UPnP instead.

Thanks for the help! Btw my router is an RT-AX88U.

@eibgrad My router firewall is disabled but I did experiment with it enabled and the button on to respond to ping but seen no change. I set the port Forward for ICMP to the router IP and bingo it replies now! Thanks!

@ColinTaylor I think I'm spoiled with my old Netgear since they must have set the router to respond to ping even with DMZ enabled by default. I believe Netgear only forwards ports to the IP when using DMZ and ICMP doesn't have port number. I might pull out my old Netgear just to see how crazy I am - I may not have realized this.
