Port Forwarding, the bane of existence

1800Allen

New Around Here
So got a new AC66U, love it so far the range and speed out do my old Linksys by miles. The problem came after setting the basic settings and getting into setting up my servers, they require ports 25565, 2015, 2017, 80 and 32308. Piece of cake, set my server box to a reserved DHCP address and forwarded all the ports under both range and local and using both protocols. Start up one server to test it all and nothing works, I have used a website and a program I found to test a bunch of ports and nothing is being forwarded. I am on the latest firmware and I have turned off the media servers and AiCloud. Any Input would be great.

Thanks,
Allen

Go to System Log -> Port Forwarding and make sure you do see the forwards there, with the correct IP and port. If they do, then it means that the forward is properly applied - the issue could be with either your modem acting as a router/firewall rather than a bridge, or your server refusing connections (I have seen at least one case where the user had an incorrectly configured firewall on his server that was actually blocking connection attempts from unrecognized IPs).

Ok, so the table shows the ports are all there. As for the modem I have not changed any settings other than rebooting it at the same time i swapped out the linksys router for the asus. How would I check if that is the problem? Also, for Windows firewall I have made incoming and outgoing exceptions to allow one port(25565) while I am testing what the real cause is.

If the target server runs WIndows then I would temporarily disable both the firewall and any security software you are running just to ensure they do not interfere.

I would double check your public IP (if you are using a DDNS, try using the IP itself in case the DDNS isn't up-to-date.

As for your modem, usually a sure sign of a modem also doing routing duties is to check the WAN IP your router gets. If it gets a private IP (192.168.x.x, or 10.x.x.x), then it means you have a double NAT situation, and the modem is acting as a router and firewall. Sometimes, people bypass this by putting their router in a DMZ on the modem - if your Asus has a different IP than the Linksys, then it might no longer be in the DMZ.

Make sure you do have NAT and Firewall enabled on the router.
