Positioning a wifi adapter with dual antennas

Soylent

Occasional Visitor
I have an external wifi adapter for my xbox, and it has two antennas that can be positioned at any angles.

How should I position the three antennas on my N66U and the adapter's two antennas?

For example, if the router is \ | / then the adapter should be \ / or | | ? Or if the router is |||, should the adapter be || as well?

Where is the router and where is the Xbox 360? Are they on the same floor or one upstairs and one downstairs?

Same room, maybe about 20 feet apart. Same height, mostly line of sight. Yet I get mediocre 5ghz signal and dropped packets (2.4ghz is a little better).

That's odd for the same room. I have my router downstairs and my daughters 360 upstairs and she gets 4 bars. What firmware are you running? If in the same room just hard wire it.

I don't want to hardwire it, because it'll go across doors.

I'm running the latest Merlin firmware, with the "xbox compatible" option enabled. I'm thinking there's either some weird interference going on or something is wrong with the router. It's only started haopenening in the last couple months.

That Xbox check box is useless only there for show. Run .5517 stock firmware and see what happens.

That option disables a specific type of error correction that is incompatible with the XBox wifi interface. Without it, people with XBox 360 have serious wireless throughput issues.

I've tried it both ways and see no difference. But I do keep it checked anyway.

Maybe Microsoft used different revisions of the wifi chipset over the years (or they eventually fixed the wifi driver on their end).

This was mostly an issue about 18 months ago - there were a few very active discussion about it on these forums.
