Powerline adapter stops / Need alternative

evilviking

New Around Here
Hey there. I have a TP Link AV500 that stops working here and there. My pc keeps "identifying" the connection. I did the reset items and it gets it to work. BUT, I really need something trouble free. I'm away a lot and I don't have time to trouble shoot the network. I need something that's going to work always. Am I asking to much?

Here are the variables, I rent a house so I can't run cat5. I have a Asus RT n66u down stairs and the power line adapter feeds the pc up stairs. I have cable internet and cable tv. Coaxial cable throughout the house.

I would also like multiple items hooked up via a switch up stairs with the pc in question.

Any suggestions? Thank you

Try replacing the powerline adapters with MOCA adapters and use the coaxial cable to distribute the signal. You will probably need to replace any splitters with splitters capable of passing at least 1000Mhz,

I have had good luck with powerline adapters but MOCA is more stable or at least gives me a higher and more consistent link rate. I have a 75/35 connection and at PC connected using MOCA I get my full speeds both up and down.

HomePlug in sleep mode.

I experienced a similar problem that evilviking is experiencing. HomePlug adapters can go into a sleep mode. Earlier versions of HomePlug adapters would not wake up unless the computer attached to the adapter was restarted and initiated a DHCP service request. When I assigned a Static IP address to my computer it was almost impossible to wake up the HomePlug adapter. Switching to Dynamic IP eliminated the problem if I turned the computer off at the end of each session.

First set up the PC to for Dynamic IP if it is set up for static IP. If you loose connectivity with the router try logging into the router from the PC. If you are unsuccessful try using the repair connection option in Windows. If you succeed in renewing the connection the HPNA adapter was in the sleep mode not defective.

re the above... I'd think that HomePlug power line IP.. would be aware of ethernet frames coming and going, but not aware of what's in the IP packets. That being ICMP/ARP or broadcast packets for DHCP server discovery, etc. Indeed, anything like these power line bridges, or MoCA bridges, has to be a layer 2 device - - unaware of layer 3 (IP and other protocols.

These devices do have a layer 3 admin interface (web server or whatever), but that's independent of the bridge.
