New Around Here
Hi all,

I'm coming from DD-WRT and about to pick up an RT-AX88U and looking at Merlin as an option for it. I have two questions that I'm hoping the community can answer for me. These are things I do now in DD-WRT that I'd like to see if Merlin can handle.

1) VLANs -> From my reading I'm 99% sure I can do this, but can I make a separate subnet for one of the LAN ports, and force that device through a unique VLAN independent of my private network?

2) DNS redirection -> One thing I do in DD-WRT using DNSMasq is pass a config option of: `server=/corp.mydomain.com/192.168.1.10` to force DNS to use the DNS server of `192.168.1.10` for any lookup of `*.corp.mydomain.com`. Is this possible? I do this because I have a VPN on the router going to where the Samba4 domain controller is, and this allows lookups for the domain to be passed to that server.

Thanks!

1) Asuswrt and Asuswrt-Merlin don't have VLAN support other than for IPTV.

2) Yes you can customise dnsmasq any way you want to.

1) Are you sure? I'm seeing info out there that seems like what I want, I just want to make sure it will work for my use case: https://www.snbforums.com/threads/guest-network-in-access-point-mode.7021/#post-360410 and https://www.snbforums.com/threads/using-vlans-for-a-2nd-access-point-with-home-guest-wifi.32125/, for example.

2) Where would those options be in the UI?

1. There's no "official" support for VLANs, like there is in Tomato for example. By "official" I mean either in the GUI, or documented by the developer (RMerlin).

2. Those posts are "unofficial" user created scripts. However your main problem is that they were developed by the community of the old generation of Asus routers. You are talking about the RT-AX88U which is completely different and uses different VLAN commands. See these posts to understand the problem:

https://www.snbforums.com/threads/rt-ax88u-vlan-tagged-setup-ethctl-news.62887/
https://www.snbforums.com/threads/rt-86u-vlanctl-ethctl-usage-puzzle.54375/

So if you're prepared to live on the bleeding edge and develop your own scripts you might get something working.
