My needs are as follows:
I need to store videos of sports competitions on an extrnal drive, not my personal MAC. I need them to be as failsafe as possible, so I am considering either purchasing a ReadyNAS NVX or PRO model, with at least 4 Tb.

If I purchase either one of these, is it best to have the information/videos stored in a RAID5, RAID6 arrangement, or is it best to use MIRRORING of the data on the NAS (not mirroring from the MAC to the NAS), if this is even possible.

Also any major difference in my situation as to NVX or PRO, other than 4 or 6 drive models?

Thanks

My suggestion is to just select "X-RAID2" and let the ReadyNAS just look after it. It's really quite capable.

for maximum protection against failure i would suggest x-raid2 with dual redundancy on the pro. thats equivalent to raid6 while retaining the expandability/flexibility of x-raid.

The ReadyNAS pro we've been testing is used heavily at Cinevate for our in-house video production. The unit here is using six x 1 TB drives in X-RAID and we've popped in 4GB of RAM too. It's fast and so far zero buggy issues like we've seen from time to time on our two TS509s. Offloading a Sony SxS media card with 8GB of data via a gigabit connected laptop to this NAS is signifantly faster than direct transfer to the laptop's single drive :)

If you really need multiple unit redundancy the single best method IMHO is to purchase another slower NAS and use rsync internally to back up, or several 1.5TB external eSATA drives. Likely failure will be a drive, or the NAS unit itself, in which case you'll want the data on a completely different NAS.
