Real throughput for the 2.4GHZ band on RT-AC68U

Hi all,

I suppose that sort of issue has been asked many times before but I'm trying to diagnose and fix what I consider to be abysmal 2.4GHz band performance on my RT-AC68U.

My setup
  1. RT-AC68U running Merlin 378.56_2
  2. iPhone 6
  3. Lenovo T450 using OEM Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 7265
  4. Desktop connected by CAT5e ethernet (1Gbps NIC)
RT-AC68U Config

Problem

Neither my iPhone nor my laptop can get over 30Mbps throughput on the 2.4GHz band even when I'm less than 1 foot away from my router.

Tests
  1. speedtest.net from both iPhone and laptop
  2. iperf3 between iPhone and Desktop as well as between Lenovo and Desktop
Is 30Mbps real throughput considered acceptable?

My initial research indicates that the iPhone 6 supports 802.11ac including 256-QAM with 1 spatial stream for a theoretical maximum throughput of 200Mbps on the 2.4GHz band while the Intel 7265 card supports 802.11ac including 256-QAM with 2 spatial streams for a theoretical maximum throughput of 400Mbps on the 2.4GHz band.

Changes tried
  1. Wireless Mode -> Auto and N Only. I don't have any legacy 802.11a/b/g devices at home.
  2. Control channel -> 1, 6, 11, and Auto (I've settled on manually selecting 6 as it's the least used in my neighbourhood with only about 2-3 other networks using that channel. All networks in my area are using 1 of the 3 recommended channels except for 1 network which is using channel #3.
  3. Channel bandwidth -> 20, 40, and 20/40
None of the changes above resulted in any real world performance differences.

Any recommendations on what I can look to do next to fix this issue?

TIA

What do you suppose get form your ISP up /down speed? Did you try something like Jperf between your devices?

Is 30Mbps real throughput considered acceptable?

im getting 36.5 MB/s from wifi to nas

using asus pce-ac68 as the wifi adapter
My initial research indicates that the iPhone 6 supports 802.11ac including 256-QAM with 1 spatial stream for a theoretical maximum throughput of 200Mbps

its max sync would be 150M

Intel 7265 card supports 802.11ac including 256-QAM with 2 spatial streams for a theoretical maximum throughput of 400Mbps

its max sync would be 300M

so if your only getting 30Mbps there is something wrong

iPhone 6 using 2.4G Band will sync 150M @40MHz and 72M @20MHz, so 30-45 throughput would be normal for the OP @20MHz bandwidth depending on the environment's interferences.

Apple does not support wide channels in 2.4GHz on their devices, even if the AP does - nor do they do Turbo/NitroQAM in that band - so they're pretty much vanilla 802.11n in 2.4
