I am looking to upgrade my one and half year Netgear D7000 modem/router, I am going for a straight router without the modem.

Although I am reasonable satisfied with Netgear D7000 but there are a couple of missing details which I am not happy;

- User Interface
- No traffic monitoring
- Missing names for wireless devices on your network
- No capability for bandwidth limiting
- Spikes in ping

I am looking at the ASUS RT-AC88U, what are some of the other options?

ASUS seems to have a lot of B.S. marketing methods.

You may also want to consider the Netgear R7800 which after putting third party firmware such as DD-WRT, becomes a very feature rich router with superb wifi coverage.

It is, Kong one of the devs, has one. It's fairly popular at DD-WRT. Look in the forums, there is a huge thread in the Atheros section, the download link for Kong's version is there along with Brainslayer's.

You could also try Voxel's modified stock, he's updated a lot of packages, and added new functionality. Or you could try LEDE (Former OpenWRT devs). LEDE incorporates the WiFi Fast and SQM QoS (SQM was done by the same people that created FQ-Codel) projects for improving latency/bufferbloat mitigation.

Don't go by the compatibility site on DD-WRT it's not updated to reflect quite a few routers.
