I'm looking for a router that supports:
  • 4 x 1 Gbps ports
  • At least 2 OpenVPN clients
  • AES-NI for faster OpenVPN performance - preferably 200Mbps+
  • Asuswrt-Merlin
I've been looking at the RT-AX68U, RT-AX86U, RT-AX86S and RT-AX92U.

WiFi, mesh and 2.5 Gb support is not needed.

Would the RT-AX68U be the best option ? I don't want to pay extra for features I'll never use.

No Asus routers support AES-NI as that is an Intel x86 feature. On the ARM platform it's simply AES.

FWIW My RT-AX86U tops out at 250Mbps using OpenVPN.

ARMv8 routers filtered by Asuswrt-Merlin support:

RT-AC86U
GT-AC2900
RT-AX68U *
RT-AX86S
RT-AX86U *
RT-AX88U
GT-AX11000

* - the models most SNB members will recommend

Would the RT-AX68U be able to support 200 Mbps + with OpenVPN ?

Doesn't the RT-AX68U have the same processor configuration as the RT-AX86S ?

With the latest Merlin version 386.4 using a reasonably close server you will get 200Mbps some of the time. With some of the earlier firmware versions prior to 386.xx speeds of over 200 Mbps used to be typical particularly if you were using PIA.
