Remove USB2 thumb drive

Hi, yes I am still using RT-AC86U and probably will flog it until I really need new tech.
I have just uninstalled Diversion and left Entware and YazDHCP untouched.
I was wondering if I can safely remove the USB2 drive? Without Diversion I don't think it is necessary anymore but I don't really know if anything will break if I remove it.
Can someone advise please?

Where is your Entware installed?

Hmmmm ... good question. I installed these a long time ago and just could not recall what I did.
I don't remember if Entware came with the Asuswrt or I installed it afterwards. Or if YazDHCP requires Entware.
So if I uninstall Entware I could remove the USB2 drive, is that right?

YazDHCP, generally, doesn't reside on the USB drive and doesn't require Entware.

The default location is USB drive. It was installed by you, doesn't come with Asuswrt/AMTM. Your swap file is on the USB drive as well.

On second thought don't think I should mess with Entware and should leave it alone.
Is there a way to find out if my router requires the USB2 drive to function after removing Diversion?

The scripts you use will tell you if Entware/swap/USB is needed.

The router does not need a USB drive to function. There are certain add-on scripts that require or recommend using a USB drive.

You don't need any scripts in this case. What YazDHCP does can be done manually and usually one time after router reset.

Is there any value in me keeping the USB drive in the router or should I just remove it?
Unless you’re using it for Addons, Storage (local or remote access), Backups etc, personally I’d remove it, if for nothing else that it won’t become the potential cause of a failed FW update or (if USB3 Mode) cause WiFi interference.

I am very tempted to remove it but don't know how to do it safely. Should I power down the router and remove it? Or I eject it from "safely remove disk" function on the router webgui?
Sorry these must be dumb questions. I want to go back to basics and only have YazDHCP as an addon to the Asuswrt firmware.

Yes. Click that, then remove it.

only have YazDHCP as an addon
OK. Can do, without USB.

Note this though (not a must):

For the backups subdirectory to survive a "Factory Defaults Reset" of the router, it's highly recommended to use a directory path located on a disk drive plugged in to one of the router's USB ports. You don't have to have Entware installed on the USB-attached disk; any USB disk drive formatted with either NTFS or ext4 is sufficient to use as storage for the backup files.
