Roaming 2 Asus RT AC66U main router dd wrt other stock firmware

New Around Here
Hi everybody,

I have been reading on the internet and messing around with my router settings more then I'd have liked too and need some help.

On my main router I have Firmware:DD-WRT v24-sp2 (02/23/15) giga firmware
On my 2cd router/access point I have the latest stock firmware Firmware Version:3.0.0.4.378_9313

My main router is downstairs while my other router is upstairs. I have the same SSIDs and different channels. When downstairs roaming works correctly for the 2.4ghz and it connects to my main router. When I connect to the 5ghz while downstairs my devices connect to my router upstairs even though the dbm is 20-25 lower then my main router.

The only custom setting from default I have put on the router is my VPN setup with IPVanish which is a script in the command line. I have 2 port forwards to my NAS. I don't see these 2 things creating any issues...

I have an intel 7260 wireless card and have turned roaming aggressiveness to the highest setting but it did not work. I have the default settings on my main router dd wrt firmware disabled the beam forming and sensitivity range is 2000. My cell phone is relatively new HTC M9 and it does the same thing from the same position downstairs. The WiFi analyzer on my phone shows a difference of only 6 dbm while my wifi analyzer for my laptop with the 7260 card shows a dbm difference of 20-25.

For my laptop the dbm between the two are 64 and 39 for channels 48 and 165. I have tried reversing the channels multiple times and sometimes it connects but then switches back to the weaker connection at the upstairs router...

When I change the SSID of the main router to something unique my devices can connect to it. But I want to be able to roam throughout my house with the device changing to the better signal on the 5ghz connection.

Is there a setting in DD WRT I missing to change or modify to make this happen? Do I need to install DD WRT on my second router? Do I need to update to a newer firmware on my main router? I have messed around with this for a while now and kind of stuck for today/tonight. Any ideas would be appreciated!
