Router randomly believes it is disconnected from Internet

I know this is going to sound strange, but every so often, once every 6-72 hours, my RT-AX56U (386.1_2) thinks it is disconnected from the internet. However I can do the following:
  1. If I was already connected to a service, such as a Microsoft Teams meeting - this continues without interruption.
  2. I can connect to the cable modem (on the WAN side of the router) and confirm all connectivity tests work from this device to the internet. Not only does it think it is connected, but if I plug another router into this device (it has 4 ports) then this is able to connect to the internet, DNS etc without issue.
  3. The automated Speedtest (spdMerlin addon) runs without reporting an issue.
However, what fails are:
  1. The Connection Monitor (connmon addon) fails - it pings bbc.co.uk which has not been down during the outage hours.
  2. Browsing to internet sites fails, even if they were previously browsed, so DNS should be cached.
  3. New devices onto the wifi / lan connect to router but cannot access sites beyond the router (except the cable modem).
I do not see any wan-disconnect errors in the system logs and the wan-events script is not called. I updated the script as suggested by someone else on here to ensure that all wan-event are logged in the system log and also calls a script. The script is not being called for a disconnect, only when I request the internet connection restart.

I can resolve the issue by selecting "Internet Connection" restart in scMerlin and the system works again within a second. Any ideas on how to diagnose or resolve this issue?

Syslog section that covers this time. You can see the speedtest working. You can also see when the restart is initiated. It takes a second to get the internet working.

The essence of the /jffs/scripts/wan-event script
Code:
#!/bin/sh
Say(){
   echo -e $$ $@ | logger -st "($(basename $0))"
}
SayT(){
   echo -e $$ $@ | logger -t "($(basename $0))"
}

scr_name="$(basename $0)"
WAN_IF=$1
WAN_STATE=$2
# Call appropriate script based on script_type
SERVICE_SCRIPT_NAME="wan${WAN_IF}-$WAN_STATE"
SERVICE_SCRIPT_LOG="/tmp/WAN${WAN_IF}_state"

# Execute and log script state
if [[ -f "/jffs/scripts/$SERVICE_SCRIPT_NAME" ]] ; then
    Say "     Script executing.. for wan-event: "$SERVICE_SCRIPT_NAME
    echo "$SERVICE_SCRIPT_NAME" > $SERVICE_SCRIPT_LOG
    sh /jffs/scripts/$SERVICE_SCRIPT_NAME $*
else
    Say " Script not defined for wan-event: "$SERVICE_SCRIPT_NAME

Do you have internet detection disabled in WAN settings? AND do you have Network Monitoring disabled in Administration>System.
Suggest to disable both. Also suggest you use Martineaus ChkWAN.sh for monitoring WAN and restarting WAN OR rebooting Router IF detected down. ChkWAN v1.17 available on Github. And get rid of your script.

hold down that reset button for 4 seconds and reset her.

I had a kind of similar issue with a ax68 where it would half work but in the GUI it would show disconnected to the internet.

@joe scian I only have ping testing in System / Administration Network Monitor. In WAN settings I do not have any internet detection options. Also, using the ChkWan script may work, however that feels like working around a failure rather than getting to the root cause.

@chichow the router reboots every 24 hours. Is that good enough or does it have to be a reset? I have turned the router off and on several times to attempt to fix.

Thanks

My problem didn't get fixed until I did the reset. (Sorry I know that's a pain)

When you randomly get the red X stating that your router isn't connected to the internet and you know it really is then the least disruptive quick fix I have found is to go into the Admin Tab then System/ basic and change the PING target and then apply it.

When for whatever reason the router isn't pinging your target to check if it is connected to the Internet then connmon probably isn't working either, even if it was ping a different target IP. Changing system status ping target seems to get connmon working again.

If this is happening frequently then of course you might want to apply a more drastic fix.

@Doverton, could be related idk, I updated uiscribe and noticed a version "out of sync" warnings to update syslog-ng in the scribe script which I did. Looked at my log to see a bunch of wlceventd deauths every few seconds between the time I updated uiscribe and updated syslog-ng via scribe.
