Do the recent ASUS routers (e.g. AC86U) always transmit at their maximum power, or do they ratchet back the signal strength based on the proximity (signal strength) of the client?

On my older AC68U (A1) I set the Transmit Power below the maximum, as it seemed to reduce the noise floor without degrading my RSSI. Now that the Transmit Power adjustment/slider has been removed from the AsusWRT UI in the States, I'm wondering if I upgrade, will I be introducing a problem.
