RT-AC66R not allowing upgrade to Merlin

I'm new to Merlin (and the RT-AC66R), having used DD-WRT on my trusty RT-N16 for the past 5yrs. A surge took out my old router, so here I am. I plugged in the AC66R and updated the factory firmware to 3.0.0.4.380_3264-g79f6bde. Having read about Merlin, I thought I'd give it a try before going to DD-WRT. So far, no joy. I've followed the installation guidelines but still end up with the message that Merlin was not able to be installed. I've tried 380.57 through 59...same message. I'm searching but not finding solutions. Can someone point me in the right direction? Thanks!

Well, that'll explain it. So much for this idea...
Thanks for the answer.
You can try to revert to an earlier firmware. I made the same mistake you did, Fortunately, I was able to downgrade to an earlier FW, then installed Merlin succesfully. Be advised, though, that not everyone was successful, so YMMV.
