RT-AC68U Merlin Install repeatedly fails at 98%

Dudeman

New Around Here
Hello,
I just installed Merlin on my RT-AC5300 and it works like a dream after much frustration with DD-WRT. Thanks for building such a solid, easy to use firmware.

I also tried to install the 380.65_4 version on my older RT-AC68U, but:
- Install via the admin tab upgrade says it installed, but does not and
- Install via the firmware restoration tool fails at 98%, every time

Based on the consistency of the failure at 98%, I assume the firmware is too big for the memory buffer. Is there a way to work around this?

Thanks for your help in advance.

Typically memory shortage: Remove any USB devices and reboot - then try to update the firmware.

If this does not help: Do a factory reset and then add only the password for the Admin access and then update the firmware.

Before factory reset you can save the user defined settings with John's NVRAM Save utility - do another factory reset after the firmware update and restore the your settings with John's utility - this approach ensures that any system settings are set to the right default values of the updated firmware version!

Thanks, Joe. I have removed everything from the router, but the ethernet cables and have done a hard reset. The flash still fails at 98%. Any other ideas?

What firmware was originally on there? There may be an intermediate step you need to take to get you to the latest.

I am using the current version of Shibby's Tomato firmware. What would you recommend as far as an interim firmware step?
