currently i have this router with an iphone 6. i have all the wireless configured manually, 5ghz VHT80 channel 161 , 2.4ghz channel 11 and 40 i believe for the mhz. anyways on the 5ghz and my iphone 6 if i walk outside my house and do a speedtest i get 30mbps, if im inside my room i get my full 180. heres where it gets weird. if i do that and walk back inside i still only get the 30mbps, only way to get it back up to the 180 i pay for from my isp is to disable wifi on phone and reconnect. any reason this could be happening? its like the link rate speed doesnt auto refresh when technically im closer to the router once ive come back into the house. thanks

It's camping on your 2.4GHz as it should, it will eventually hand up to 5GHz if running the same SSID, but generally, if running two different SSID's, it has no reason to move if the current connection is good enough...

Thanks for your response. the only way I have seemed to cure this is to make the 5ghz a different name and making the iPhone connect to it. Guess 2 same ssid won't work well cause like I said it camps the 2.4 and only way back to the 5 is to disconnect and reconnect. Doesn't seem right to me at all

#2 is already a full answer to me.

btw if you set up 2.4GHz with 40Mhz as you said, there is no way iPhone 6 will ever connect to 2.4 band..

Back to your question or rather your expectation...

Wifi is a hobby in wireless industry when compared to GSM/UTMS/LTE which started out with a much solid and rigid foundation..so seamless roaming e.g. between bands is still much to be desirable.
