In media bridge mode will the AC87U only connect to another AC87U or will any router do?

Another Asus router will be fine. No idea about compatibility with other manufacturer's routers however.

Yeah I was thinking along the lines of a BT Home Hub 5 so guess it'll be pot luck in that case.
