RT-AX86u Media Bridge server fw best practice?

Occasional Visitor
I setup my old router RT-AX86u router as a media bridge running latest merlin firmware and it seems to be losing connection every day and needs to be reset. I re-flashed it back to stock Asus latest firmware to see how it behaves in media bridge mode. What firmware is best to use on media bridge devices?? stock or merlin. Please explain.

Main router is a RT-BE7200 w/ latest Merlin firmware.

Thx

What is the RSSI in the system logs when the RT-BE7200 looses contact ?
Same question for the RT-AX86u, if the logs are available.

stock or merlin. Please explain.

No need to run Asuswrt-Merlin on a router in Media Bridge mode. No routing there, it's a wireless-to-wired bridge only. None of the additional Asuswrt-Merlin features will be used and this operation mode comes unchanged from Asuswrt upstream. If your Media Bridge doesn't hold the connection (known issue with different Asus routers and firmware) you have to find the firmware version that works well. Since the router may auto-upgrade you may want to block Asus update servers upstream for this device.

My RSSI is -50 dbm an link sometimes drops from 1300mbps to 60 and then few hours later goes back to 1300. Not sure what could be causing this issue. I also noticed that latest iphones seem to have issues sometime with 5ghz wifi on the asus routers \ aimesh . Is this a know issue? if yes what the reason behind it. Are there some router optimizations needed for ios devices to work properly ??

Are the channel settings on AUTO ? or other smart connect, MLO, etc ?
Have you at least done a wireless survey to see if your neighbors are blasting into your RF space ?

I am using ch 153 which noone else is using nearby. MLO is turned off on 5ghz wifi. I am using a guest 5ghz ssid for the media bridge. Wifi 7 is set to on but guest network doesn't have an option to turn on or off the mlo feature.

Enable 160MHz channel bandwidth on the 5GHz band. This will double the media bridge link rate. Lower the beacon interval from 100 to 50 (or lower) for the 5 GHz band. This will lower the RSSI dbm, thus making a more robust wireless connection.

What should be the most optimal settings for 5ghz wifi on RT-BE88u \ 7200 router for compatibility with all devices ios devices , media bridges, etc on latest merlin firmware??

turn off wifi 7 and 6e . 80 Mhz channel width on 5GHz, 20 MHz or possibly 40/20 on 2.4 GHz, smart connect off as a start.

My Router is RT-BE88U which is wifi7 Dual Band. I will try turning off wifi 7 and setting ch to 80mhz. Thanks for suggestions. What is the issue with IOS devices and asus routers. Is there a known compatibility issue that is not resolved yet? It seems that when i connect to 5ghz with iphone it sometime causes issues to the 5ghz band and i need to switch it to 2.4ghz instead.

merlin 3006.102.4 - on Asus BE88U , and stock latest fw on RT-AX86u as the media bridge. I noticed that sometimes the media bridge which is on a my guest 5ghz network slows down to a crawl 60mpbs and the only way to resolve is to disconnect the iphone from 5 ghz wifi and reboot the media bridge, then wait few min to send to go back to 1300mbps. Not sure how ios devices are causing this or just coincidence's.??

I used to have the rt-ax86u as the router with latest fw and netgear r7000 and the media bridge running asus merlin vortex fw and didnt see this issue.

Also is there a limit of how many media bridges you can run on your network in case i want to test out the r7000 with asus merlin vortex fw?

test with a different wireless device, non IOS.
BUT.... did you test the different firmware ?

The media bridge had latest merlin but i switched it back to stock fw . what is the most stable fw for the rt-ax86u as media bridge? What is the most stable fw for the rt-be88u ? Latest is not best?

Your best bet is to use the Asus firmware for both. Use default WIFI settings except disable DFS. Use Dual Band SmartConnect and set the AX86U as an AiMesh node. It will be more stable than a media bridge.
