RT-N56U ad blocking

New Around Here
Hello all,

Does anyone happen to know if it is possible to do ad-blocking at the router level if you own a RT-N56U? I updated the hosts file on the router itself but it didn't seem to do anything. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advanced.

ps. I'm aware it's possible to do ad-blocking at the DNS level but I hear that this slows down service more than other possible methods.
