My 2.4 is at 40MHZ on a separate SSID. When I change the bandwidth of the 5ghz to either 40ghz or 20/40ghz the wireless client is unable to connect. I change it back to 20 and everything works fine. Any ideas? All other settings are AUTO.

Same router running 380.59 and 40mhz, no problems here. Make sure your client-side settings are correct. But I don't think most 5ghz devices should have a problem with 40mhz bandwidth.

What client are you trying to connect on the 5GHz band and at what range?

Is the client known to have any limitations (design or otherwise)?

Does using a brand new ssid for the 5GHz band (that the client has never 'seen') allow 40MHz bandwidth to work?

I created a new 5GHZ SSID and still cant connect to 40MHZ. I am using a MBPr 2013 so it shouldn't be a HW problem. I tried using iPhone 6 and it said password was incorrect (which it wasn't). I changed the password in the router and still get the password incorrect message from iphone. MBPr just wont connect (no password error). everything works fine on 20MHZ. I'm running Merlin 378.51

Is the ssid and/or password all alphanumeric characters?

so I uploaded an old config file after the back-up i just made didnt work and for whatever reason I am able to change to 40mhz now. Go figure! Thanks for the help.

If I'm following this correctly, you have your network settings bunged up. I would not have expected this to work.

At least it works for you. :)

There are 5GHz clients that support 802.11n that only do 20MHz channels - mostly phones and tablets, but I've seen low-end USB adapters do this as well...
