RT-N66u and SMC D3G-CCR

I am trying to help a friend set up a small network and ftp thing at his business. I picked up the N66u router and a portable harddrive. He is on comcast business with the SMC D3G gateway. I am trying to set up the router so we can access work files from outside the LAN. According to google and as fas as I understand I need to put the SMC in bridge mode and do some black magic to the N66U router. I am stumped. I disabled DHCP on the gateway, Disable the NAT on the gateway and all that happens is I lose internet access and get nowhere fast. If someone could help me out with the next steps I gotta do in a very simple way for me, who has no real experience doing this, can understand. Thank you guys for the help.

Did you set the modem in bridge mode?
