New Around Here
Hi All,
Apparently I've overestimated my technical capabilities in attempting to set up a home network.
Some background: I have a Motorola Surfboard SB6120 cable modem (SB_KOMODO-1.0.6.6-SCM99-NOSH), a Windows7 64 bit desktop, a Windows XP laptop, a ASUS RT-N66U (3.0.0.4.376_1071) and Charter Cable Internet.
My original setup was the Windows7 machine plugged directly into the SB6120. I then purchased the RT-N66U and hooked plugged the CAT5 cable from the modem to the WAN port of the ASUS router. I plugged in my Windows7 machine via ethernet to a LAN port on the ASUS router. I was unable to reach the setup page (attempting to connect to 192.168.1.1 would bring up a login prompt, entering the default password value resulted in me waiting for the wizard to load which it never did in either IE or Firefox). I called ASUS support and they told me to attempt the connection via another machine; I was able to login to the router via my Windows XP machine and setup the router.
I am still unable to connect to reach the router config page via my Windows7 machine. I also am unable to signin to Skype, various online games I play as well as certain webpages. Other webpages now have a noticeable lag on loading where there were none before. However, I am able to reach these services/websites on my Windows XP laptop.
Some fixes I've attempted: rebooting modem and router; factory reset on router, refreshing ip, flushing dns, turning off upnp, turning off router firewall, changing DHCP refresh to normal, resetting the connection, lots of the suggestions in this thread (http://forums.smallnetbuilder.com/showthread.php?t=12435).
Some other diagnostic information:
Attempting to tracert google.com results in me connecting to router.asus.com but the next jump times out (on both laptop and desktop machines). Afterwards it'll jump through to Charter and proceed normally.
So before I contact my ISP, are there any other courses of action I can try to resolve this? If I can't resolve this issue, I'll contact my ISP and if that fails I guess I'll just have to return the router.
Sorry for the wall of text and thanks in advance for any advice!
*Let me know if I need to post any ipconfig/router setup details. All connections are currently via ethernet cables other than the coaxial cable for the modem.
