[RT-N66U] Speed issues

New Around Here
Firmware: 3.0.0.4.376_3861

I just got a new laptop with an ac compatible wifi card and have been using the 5 Ghz wifi connection. My old laptop could only connect to the 2.4 Ghz and I would consistently get up to 5 MB/s download.

Now, with connecting to the 5 Ghz band, I have reached higher speeds but rarely. Usually, I will see fast ping times and speeds in the morning, but as the day goes on, the speed gets slower and slower.

A few days ago, in the evening, I ran a speed test by-passing the router and connected via ethernet directly to my modem.

Results (D/U/ping): 33.46 MB/s 12.25 MB/s 8 ms

Then I connected via ethernet through the router and got the following results: 0.46 MB/s 1.03 MB/s 72 ms

So even the ethernet connection slows down considerably.

Any recommendations on what I can do to figure this out or should I just get a new router?

After installing Merlin and doing a factory reset, ethernet gives me great speeds - 29.18 MB/s 36.78 MB/s 16 ms - was not getting this before this process so that is a good sign.

Connecting with 5 Ghz, the ping is slow but the speed is there - 22.50 MB/s 15.77 MB/s 63 ms

I'll keep monitoring it.

Thanks for the help!

Good to see improvement.

For further tweaking of your network, try setting the 2.4GHz and the 5GHz bands to Short Preamble and also manually choose a specific control channel for both bands.

Try channels 1, 6 or 11 in the 2.4GHz band, then, reboot both the router and the computers you'll use to test with and see which channel is the fastest and has the least latency for your environment.

For the 5GHz band, you can test every channel you have available. Slow going, but it will be worth it to give you the fastest possible setup for your environment right now.
