RT-N66U unable to attain WAN connection

New Around Here
I'm having trouble with my RT-N66U. I currently have an old WRT120N router working with Automatic Configuration to connect to my AT&T Uverse NVG510 Modem/Router. I have disabled routing on the NVG510 and set it to hand out a single IP to the wireless router.

The problem is that my WRT120N can attain an IP from the modem without problem, however, my RT-N66U is unable to. It always shows "Disconnected" from the Internet. I've followed the GUI steps numerous times to get it connected without any success. I've even installed Merlin's firmware in an attempt to get it working.

Does anyone have any ideas on what could be wrong? I will post the logs later this evening when I get home.

Thanks!
Dave

If your provider is based on cable technology (Docsis), then you need to turn off the modem for 5-10 minutes every time you change to a different router. Otherwise, the ISP will refuse to allocate a new IP to the new MAC address requesting one.

Hi Merlin,

It appears that it is not of the Docsis variety, however, I will try unplugging everything for longer (10+ min) this evening and report back.

Thanks Merlin! :D

I did a factory reset on the RT-N66U and then unplugged everything for close to 30 minutes. Plugged in the modem, waited 5 minutes, then plugged in the RT. Connected to the RT and configured the SSID's and everything has been working! If something changes, I'll post again.

Take care,
Dave

Update: my WAN connection stopped working yesterday. I've tried unplugging everything numerous times and even left everything unplugged over night. This morning I plugged in my modem and went to work. Came home several hours later then plugged in the router. I'm able to connect to the router fine but unable to get a WAN connection. This is baffling to me as nothing had changed in the setup.

Does anyone have any ideas? This happened a few months ago and I gave up on the Asus back then and went back to my old Linksys router. I'd hate to use a 5yr old router over this one but might have to.

Have you made a new connection in windows networking? Sometimes W$ gets its underwear in a knot over a new hardware bit or something else. Erase the old connection and start over.

The problem exists on all devices. There were no new devices introduced. We have three Windows 7 laptops that connect and were working fine in the morning then were no longer working later in the afternoon.

To prove it's the routers fault, late last night I swapped the Asus router out and put my old Linksys back in. Powered the modem up, waited a few minutes then powered up the Linksys... router was able to connect immediately and I have internet access again. There's something wrong with the Asus and I have no idea how to figure it out as it seems to happen so infrequently. Like in this case, the setup was working flawlessly for 23 days. In the past, the setup has worked for weeks (if not months) on end, then just stopped.

Does anyone know if there's a way to get the Log to persist a reboot? Cuz when I have this problem, I'm unable to get into the GUI for the Asus router and need to pull the plug. Plugging back in gives me local network access but the WAN remains down.

Could you give more information?

What is the the local LAN IP address of your modem/router?
Is it running the latest firmware from AT&T?
Is it in bridge mode?

What is the local IP address of your asus router?
Is it in router mode or AP mode?
What firmware version?

Try going to the Asus support website and download the latest firmware. After you flash the latest firmware , then reset it to factory defaults (restore factory defaults. )

You can also do a google search to learn how to cascade a router LAN to WAN.

I suggest to find the Linksys MAC address at the WAN side and clone that in the RT-N66U.
Probably the ISP has no time out for the MAC address, but remembers the old MAC address for ever.

I did a factory reset

This is the only way i could fix this issue myself. Happened twice in last 3 months (since purchase). I do have cable modem. I can also confirm that plugging modem to pc was working great, so it really is the RT-N66U failing with no way (that i know of) to recover other than hard reset.

I am open to any other way that doesn't imply re-updating or reconfiguring a router, but aside from flashing to another firmware, I am in the dark.
