What are normal Samba read and write speeds?
RT-AC1900P
Merlin firmware 384.19
Solid state disk on USB3 port formatted NTFS
64k cluster size
Using Windows robocopy multithreaded to copy to/from share on the router.
Wired connection both router and PC on same gigabit switch
I see about 250 megabits writing and a little faster reading four gigabyte files.
Both cores running 90 to 100 percent during transfers.
Is this slow speed normal or am I doing something wrong?

I was hoping to see better speeds with USB 3.

On the bright side it is faster than cloud storage.

The 1900p is paid for.

A two bay NAS with two 4 TB drives would be over $300.

You are right they are not cheap.

I just picked up the Asustor AS1004T V2 for $300 CAD on sale. Need 4 bays not two and this was the most cost effective version for my needs. If you need HDMI ports, link aggregation or 10Gbps the prices goes up. In my setup I stream from a Hi Media Andriod box so I just need it for network storage and nothing else.

So USB 3 is mostly marketing hype for this router.

I am setting this up for my sister who doesn’t have a NAS.
It will allow laptops and cell phones to access the
external drive without physically connecting to the drive.
When the want to copy large files they can still connect the drive to a laptop.
If she decides she wants something faster she can always buy a real NAS.

The issue as merlin stated is the cpu.

So it will depend on usage. How much data are you expecting to be accessing on this thumb drive and at what frequency?

If you are talking about GB's of data that's going to be accessed on a somewhat regular basis that is going to take away resources from the router. And its primary goal should be to route data not to serve files.

So it will depend greatly on what you are doing.

The router will only be used as a file server – access point mode with both radios off.

Currently using ISP provided router.

Eventually will use an Edgerouter x instead of ISPs router.

i also having a hard time to copy/paste via samba (always get disconnected or router restart)
in the end i'm using the build in ftp, at least more manageable (not getting disconnected) even thou there's 0 kb trf a few times
