sda1 now sdb1 - easy fix?

I had to power down everything (first time in AGES) , now the attached USB drive which was sda1 is now showing as sdb1 , I know I managed to fix this last time it happened , I've tried all the usual unmounting , rebooting , powering down totally and waiting...I really don't want to factory reset unless I really have to...

the network stats can't be loaded/updated because it's looking for sda1.

anyone remember an easy fix other than the ones I've already mentioned ?

Have you tried giving the hard drive a Label Name? if not tried that.

UUIDs are persistent and only change if the filesystem has changed or if you manually generate a new UUID ... use blkid to identify the UUID/s of attached drives.
