Looking for input on my backup strategy for backing up ~1.1TB (currently) of docs/pics/videos.
My current setup is 500GB C: drive for OS and apps (this drive is incrementally imaged weekly, and full imaged monthly with Acronis True Image)
I use a 2TB D: drive for Data (docs/pics/video). Also backup my wife’s and my laptops here.
I use a 2nd 2TB internal drive E: to backup the entire D: (data) drive using SyncbackSE with versioning, scheduled to backup daily.
I then backup weekly to a external detachable 3rd 2TB drive.
The D: drive is continuously backed up online to Carbonite.
It’s all automated except for connecting weekly for the external hard drive backup.
I haven’t gone to RAID and/or NAS as I felt this was a simpler less expensive way (hw cost, operating cost, and management).
As my data grows I plan to add another 2TB F: and keep all my Movies/video on it (that’s currently 70% of all my data), with another 2TB drive G: to back it up to. My case can hold 6 - 3.5” drives currently, 9 total if I add 5.25” bay hard drive bay adapters. So I have plenty of room in my case for more drives.
Been looking for an applications that automatically monitors SMART information on all the drives and notifies (email ideally) when one starts going flakey. Anyone know of one?
Looking for input on advantages in going to NAS/RAID in this setup.
One particular question I have is whether RAID will detect and correct if a file on disk gets corrupted. I found one case where I had a old jpeg get corrupted some how and of course all my backups have the same problem with the file. Only recently turned on versioning in SyncBack, but not sure if it would have detected a difference in the corrupted file and versioned it. Anyone know?
RAID just seems to be a pain to setup and manage, and a NAS box just seems much more expensive and waste to have to buy, power, make room for,…
Input appreciated.
