Set up advice for READYNAS NV+

New Around Here
Hi all,

I'm pretty new to the NAS world (Don't even have one yet). I have decided that the READYNAS™ NV+ 4 Drive is the one I want. I have one question though.

I am going to populate it with 3 1TB Samsung drives initially, I already have one in my PC so want to set the NAS up with 3 then add the 4th (From the PC) after I have copied all the data from it to the NAS. Am I going down the right path. if so how would I do it, I just really need to know if RAID 5 will be ok or should I use Netgear's X Raid.

Cheers,

Loopy

Using XRAID is the simplest way to go. Be sure the drives you are going to use are on the approved drive list.

Thanks for that Tim,

The Drives are one the approved list I'm currently using a Samsung 1TB HD103UJ so I'll grab three more of those, you can't see any issue with the data migration then? XRaid certainly looks easier that using the FLEXRaid

I'll be grabbing it this week so I'll let you know how I get on, once its up and running. It'll be getting it to work properly with the WDTV Live that'll will be a challenge

Cheers
Dave

Keep in mind that each time you add/change a drive, the array has to rebuild. This can take half a day or even more, depending on array size. If you write more data to the array while it is rebuilding, it takes even longer.

This issue isn't unique to XRAID. NASes that support RAID migration / expansion also behave the same way, i.e. one drive at a time.
