Smart home and IoT, a disaster?

System Error Message

I thought i should write this to discuss about what shouldnt be made and what should be done with the billions of vulnerable devices already out there.

Not sure if anyone has watched it but that poor girl living in a "smart" house, essentially it shows the flaws of having everything connected to the internet.

Device manufacturers should stop making everything internet capable, just make it LAN capable only.

I know lots of people arent capable of configuring a simple router and the issue with smart TVs as well but which do you prefer, being dumb and having the convenience of you potentially exposing you to security flaws or spending the effort to learn and set up your own smart home network that is free from any cloud or online account/connection and can only be accessed from LAN.

For IP cameras this is serious because online accounts that persist even if the device is reset allowing previous owners or sellers to view it even if it has a new owner is very dangerous. Essentially it means someone could tap into your surveillance network in order to observe your security if they plan to steal or perhaps get any private information.

Lets not forget about some companies that gave away private information and security information, like d-link giving away their keys or EA's version of steam.

The solution is not to run and hide from internet connectivity.

Better to push manufacturers to make their products more secure and learn how to live safely in a connected world.

But the same convenience can be achieved by using LAN and VPN instead of connecting to the internet directly or to some remote server and that would be more secure.

It's a bit more complicated that that...

But I've give you a hint - VLAN's to break out customer services from carrier/over the top providers, and we still need to secure the IoT end-points - and that's where the struggle at the moment is - provisioning and securing them.

I've got a few ideas on how to solve this one - and they're scalable enough, and we're moving forward with some of the concepts - I've got patents on these items, similar to my work with 802.11 meshes...

been burning on these problems for a long time, and working the standards guys to that end...
