New Around Here
hello every,

i'm connected to the internet through a shared internet connection through a switch,

and also have 3 computers connected to the same switch,

what i want is to setup a local network between the 3 computers (one of them is connected to a peinter) but keep those 3 pc separated from the internet network

i hope the following picture make the idea clear :

Hi Mostafaxx,

Is there a router/firewall in your actual setup? I mean, how is the switch connected to the internet? Because form what I understand, you just need to add a router/firewall between your switch and the internet and you're done. That's basically the standard setup for a shared internet connection. You can find a lot of info regarding router setup on this forum or anywhere on the net.

There may be something I'm missing so if this does not answer your question, please clarify.

well every thing is done like you said
and the network works fine the network now is laid like that:

but it seems that i can't connect to the internet from any of the office
3 pcs unless i set the gateway to 192.168.1.1 which isn't my office network router ???

Sounds like you have the uplink to the shared network connected to the LAN side of your router.

The router portion is between LAN and WAN. All the LAN ports are connected to the same network and you will not separate your network from the shared one by using a LAN port (all LAN ports are just a standard switch, which is not a router). Also, if there is another DHCP on the shared network, the one in you router could be conflicting with it.

So, to achieve what you want, you may need to add a new router with a WAN port instead of the one you have. Yours looks like it is a router with a build in ADSL modem, which is like having a standard router with its WAN port plugged into an ADSL modem, so I don't think it can be used to separate 2 networks, it can only be used to connect to an ADSL ISP.

Also, how does your shared network connect to the internet? Or rather, what is the topology of the shared network, and what kind of ISP do you use?

how does your shared network connect to the internet?

well i don't know about that since it isn't mine, i'm just a subscriber,
but i think he's using an ADSL modem router (similar to mine) and a switch.

and what kind of ISP do you use?
just a local one i'm from Egypt.

well i guess i will cancel the idea of separating the networks till i find a router with a wan port, till then i will depend on win7 crap password protected share.

damn that was an expensive router to waste ...
