I have a RT-AX86U router, firmware 388.1, without wireless connections, just as a DHCP server and switch.

My cable modem is connected to my RT-AX86U, via the 2.5 Gbe port.
This router was connected to the rest of my home network using the 1 Gbps ports
I was getting 1.2 Gbps (on a 1.5 Gbps plan) vis spdMerlin tests.

then i changed things.

I connected the cable model to the normal WAN port, (1.0 Gbps) amd connected the rest of my home network you the 2.5 Gbps port.
I am geting appoximately 960 Mbps sped.

now i wanted to switch things back

i moved the ethernet cable from the cable modem back to the 2.5 port on the RT-AX86u.
and the rest of the network is connected to the 1.0 Gbps LAN ports.

Using the spdMerlin, I still only getting 950 Mbps speeds?

What setting could I have missed, as the speed is stll around 950 Mbps? I should be about 1.2 Gbps, like before.

GUI says I’m connected via WAN 1.0 Gbe port,
Lights on the front of the router show I’m connected via the 2.5 Gbe port.

You may have to wait for better firmware. 388.1 was built on never released Asuswrt base and much newer Asuswrt is available now. Don't look at ports indication because it's buggy as in early 388 Asuswrt. Your router is wired and you don't see the major 388.1 issue - Wi-Fi performance.

Well you are correct, it’s buggy.

I seem to be getting the best speeds by setting up a duel wan, and the secondary outlet being USB, but nothing connected on the usb.

wierd.

Have you tried a reboot of the router?
or possibly a modem reboot, then router reboot? after re-wiring to the way you had it...

it's likely a valid bug. while i'm currently back-leveled to 386.72, i saw this bug on 388 as well. there are 3 devices connected to my ax86u lan ports. all show 1 Gbps when in use except one which consistently read 100 Mbps.

the original 50' cable for the attached 4k tv was abused by wedging it between the wall and the carpet, but it seemed to work ok. after doing a speed test with my laptop, the ui metric seemed correct as i could barely achieve 100 Mbps speeds on a 300 Mbps network. the problem followed the wire as i tried different ports on the router.

after replacing the cable, 300+ was easily achieved. made me a believer of the ui metric until the "system status" ui STILL showed 100 Mbps! i also tried it with the stock firmware and as expected, no change. i don't believe merlin tweaks this. and in case anyone is curious, there were several hard resets performed as i was attempting to fix more serious problem with the vpn while on 388.

. . . so yeah, looks buggy to me.

Try turning both the router and modem off. Then power up the modem and once it's up the router. If the speed is not as it was before the changes, then reverse the order of powering up.

You are dealing with an auto speed issue which is much more common than people realize. Besides this, there is something odd going on with the router and the speed the lights are indicating.

Good luck!

mind you, as i previously wrote, i did several hard resets but nothing with the modem. the situation was quite frustrating as you might imagine. so before i embark, keep in mind the following:
  1. the indicated speed is incorrect as i am truly at 300+ Mbps
  2. the behavior occurs on all lan ports
i mention this because when you write that it may be an "auto speed" problem, wouldn't that in itself indicate a ui metric fault since my measured speeds are fine? also, the 2 other lan port devices read fine showing 1 Gbps which is the max port speed.

Hu? you wrote:

I believe your 2.5-G port connected to the modem at 1-Gb

I believe this is an auto speed issue and the reason you see the same speed as when on the 1-Gb wan link. Asus dose not give us control of the speed of the ports or the duplex of the ports. This is called auto speed.

well, i tried the power off sequence that you described. no change. perhaps it has to do with the fact that my modem is plugged into the 1g (blue) port not the 2.5g (yellow).

i can tell you, this was an extremely painful exercise since the modem is in another part of the house that's difficult, at best, to reach. i'm truly glad, that it's rare when i must work with it physically.

still, since you were so kind to take the time, i wanted to get back. btw, with no wan cable attached, it still reported the 1 Gb speeds and of course, the 100 Mbps speed for that one long cable. kind of tells me the modem has little to do with how it determines speed but i'll defer to you on this as i'm done.

again, it's just a bad metric as the actuals read correct.

thanks

You have to set it to the prt you are connecting the modem to, be either 1G WAN or 2.5G WAN
(choices are; 1g wan, 2.5 g wan or USB...to define wich will be considered in use and so, defining the rest of your test set-up and test results)

so my choices on that page are "wan, 2.5g wan, usb," and wan has always been selected. given that, it would again seem accurate with the exception of the 100 Mbps metric. keep in mind now, i'm running merlinware but i had the same reporting running the stockware prior to 388.22525.

we have a new release of merlinware (388.2) that posted yesterday. i'm about to take that dive again and that will likely be tedious as 388.1 just destroyed my vpn connections. so while i don't expect any change, i will report back should i observe one.
