Speed Problems for Asus RT-N56u

New Around Here
Hi Everyone,

I am a newbie with networks and here to build up my knowledge base through SNB.

I recently bought an Asus RT-n56u router and set it up. Mostly using default settings. The router is connected to the following clients:
1) XBOX 360 slim.
2) 2 laptops with intel 5300 card.
3) 1 Laptop with intel 3945ABG card.
4) 1 Macbook with some 11g card. (4 years old)

I had a netgear 11g router which worked really fine until there came a WD MyBook world edition ii 2TB Network drive. I wanted to stream movies from this drive to my laptops and my XBOX. My room gave only 1-2 bars with this router which was fine for normal net browsing.

So i went ahead and bought a ASUS RT-n56u router to replace my old one. First initial test were impressive. with 5GHz band, i could get 300 MBPS link speed (file transfer speed to my network drive was like 12-15 mbps). I was happy with this since with old router i got 1-2 mbps speeds in good vicinity.

Then i tried the 2.4 ghz band. I am a little upset with this one as my intel 5300 connects it using on 144 mbps speed. even my old laptops and xbox dont work at good speeds in this band. Although the manual says that we can get 300 mbps in this band as well. i am happy that i get 5 bars in my room still why am i not getting good speeds. even the xbox is not able to stream HD movies without stutter. Is there something i am missing.

Please help. Thanks
