Im pretty sure it's a static route I need to configure for this.

    Running a AC88U

Ftp server behind the router works fine, but when I enable the vpn client, I can no longer connect to the ftp from outside the router

    Anyone help please.

That's presumably because all your traffic (including the FTP server's) is now going out through the VPN client's connection.

Yeah probably, and I can no longer connect to the ftp server from the outside world.

Merlin's firmware has Policy Routing for the OpenVPN client which would stop the FTP server from using the VPN.

Oh, BTW. Using normal FTP over the internet is not secure (unless you put it through a VPN or something) because all of the information is sent as clear text, even the usernames and passwords.

It's not a normal ftp. And this applies to any services behind the router, ftp, http etc

Anyone got any other tech help with this issue on hand?
