What modem? Too much load on the USB hub circuit on the motherboard or bad cable? Work fine with another computer?

Most modems(bridged), when using the USB, will assign the computer connected a public IP(not a good idea, exposed). If you have an router using the ethernet link to the modem also, the router will get a public IP too. If the ISP only allows you to have 1 public IP address, then one or the other will not work depending on which received an IP first.

If the modem is a router/modem, then the USB connected computer is given a private IP just like any other LAN computer. If ethernet and wifi connected computers work, but the USB connected computer doesn't, try swapping computers to replicate the failure.

Well restarting the modem solved it.

Though later in the day a new issue popped up, one of the computer on the ethernet was reporting "Limited connectivity". Restart both pc and modem but couldn't get it to work. Changed the modem with another and it was working.
