Am a newbie in the NAS arena. I have 2 WD Red 3Tb each drives. When I set it up, I must have set it up as one volume. I am about to reset to factory settings including erasing data. Should I set up the drives now as Volume 1 & 2? I do not want to mirror the drives.

if i remember correctly, their default config is 'x-raid" or basically one big volume (JBOD).
What are you trying to accomplish ?
max storage ?
max speed ?
redundancy between the drives ?

Storage still is shown as 6Gb. I think the speed issue may not be relevant and I do not need redundancy between the drives.

I am only seeking response on any reason why one should consider multiple volumes other than redundancy.

organization ?
Folders on a JBOD serve the same purpose.
Raid 1 is mirroring for some redundancy at a cost of one disk space
Raid 0 is parallel operation for speed at max space.
Raid 5 is N drives with resulting N-1 space. Maybe not the best compromise these days.
