T-Mobile TM-AC1900 router odyssey

New Around Here
I called and received a free T-Mobile AC1900 router. As I didn't like the IP range - 192.168.29.1 and there wasn't a way to change it. I downloaded the latest ASUS 68U or 87U firmware (I've forgotten) and did a web update. All went well and the locked features were unlocked.

A few days ago I "updated" the router as there was a new RT-AC68U/87U firmware available. Unfortunately it updated to the latest T-Mobile version of the firmware instead and locked the router down again to the original settings.

After reinstalling my original router, I set to work to fix the problem. So far, it's unfixable.

I had found that the router firmware was made up of two parts, the CFE, and the TRX file or the actual OS. The T-Mobile CFE updated and locked the system to version, 2.1.2.2. I downgraded it to 2.1.2.1. I to allow for non-T-Mobile updates and also loaded the original T-Mobile firmware, 3.0.0.4.376_1703.

That should have allowed me to do the original update again to the RT-AC68U or 87U. It didn't. Having Telnet access and updating the CFE bin file to different versions doesn't help.

I can use the web interface to update to the original T-Mobile firmware, 3.0.0.4.376_1703 again, but it will not update to any other firmware.

I've tried Tomato, ASUS AC-87U, AC68U, DD-WRT in different revisions and sizes, and others both using the web interface and using the restore utility.

For some reason, the ASUS recovery/restore utility no longer allows an upload in the router recovery mode, no matter what technique I use. It messages that the router isn't in recovery mode. I've had plenty of experience doing with the original update. It is.

Has anyone had these problems and found a way to upload a ASUS or other firmware.

Make sure after you have done the downgrade of both the TM FW to 1703 & CFE to 2.1.2.1 that you do an NVRAM reset (power/WPS). After you have done that, telnet in to the router and type NVRAM get bl_version.

If that isn't showing 2.1.2.1, you probably won't be able to do the restore to AC68u firmware via recovery. CFE 2.1.2.2 locks to TM firmware only.

Hopefully that helps.
