Testing New Hard Drives

First post here, so Greetings everyone!

The method I use to test EVERY mechanical disk upon receipt is by either doing the steps in the following link on a Linux box (with the proper packages installed), or booting a Parted Magic disk (quite easy). This takes a very long time (nearly a day per TB), but if the disk doesn't pass, I can RMA it right away. If all is well, it goes on the shelf for use when needed.

Perhaps I am too cavalier about this - I open the box, install the drive, format, then add to my ZFS pool.

ZFS gives redundancy so if it fails, RMA, rinse & repeat.

I've done this with used drives from ebay if they can be had for about half the price of new and in warranty. If the used drive fails, RMA for a new / refurb. Found some nice deals this way.
