Thinking of buying a Asus RT-AC68u ?

I have two Linksys routers at the mo a e4200 and a ea6500, but have been disappointed with the native remote access from a ios app, which is vital for me,

My questions are- thoughts on the rt-ac68u ?

I've read on the ios App Store that the latest up date to Asus aicloud supports remote file access on non asus routers and network connected NAS, am I correct?

any experience would be great thanks

Hi David. Welcome :) What exactly are you looking to do? Remote management of the device? Or remote file access to a local network drive? Or both?

If it's just remote management, then any modern-day router should offer that feature. You'd just need to turn it on, then, assuming the IP your ISP assigns you is dynamic (most residential IPs are), register for and store a DDNS hostname with a service like Dyn or No-IP, and you're good to go. If you need more details on that process, I'd be happy to explain.

If it's remote file access to a local network drive, the most common method would be to run a VPN server on you local network, either on the router itself (preferable) or a workstation/server behind it. If VPN isn't available on either router with their factory firmware, then third-party firmware, such as shibby's TomatoUSB or DD-WRT, will offer VPN in various flavors.

Hi Trip, both really, got some remote router management with my Linksys, but studying the Asus aicloud ios app, it seems u can do remote file management on HDD's connected to asus routers and none asus routers, I think, remote file management being the more important, when you've got ur router settings settled down how I like, I like to leave it, but doing firmware updates without waiting for windows to boot up on my laptop is good, it seems u may be able to connect remotely to my Synology NAS box on my LAN as well, thanks for ur offer of help, hoping to get the thoughts of someone with a rt-ac68u, I've got an ios app called Filebrowser working on LAN, which also links cloud storage such as Dropbox, the thought of an all in one seems appealing, I'd like to know more about networking, as everything is moving to the cloud.
