Traffic bypassing VPN when tethered RT-AX88U

Occasional Visitor
Usually I use a smart DNS which works really well. I've got a gap between ISP connections so am tethering 5G data as the backup WAN. But sites can confirm my location now somehow when I'm using the Smart DNS or even a VPN. Do the usual settings for DNS and VPN not apply to WAN2 or would I need to somehow reset some routings? Any suggestions here?
