Two RT-AC68R's - AC Bridge Setup

CardFan

New Around Here
I just picked up two RT-AC68R's from the Best Buy deal and wondering if someone could give me some feedback on the best way to set them up. I've got one set up as the main router in the basement (cable modem also connected). I've got the second setup in repeater mode, located on the first floor, and it's linking at 877 Mbps (I think the settings are ok since it will link at 1300 Mbps when the two routers are closer together). I've been connecting most of the wireless devices to the repeater on the first floor since the signal from the basement router to the second floor isn't that strong. I've also got a PCE-AC68 on the way to use with my desktop (also on the first floor but in a different room from the repeater mode router).

So I guess I have two questions:
I'm only getting 65 Mbps connecting my laptop to the repeater mode router on the first floor (2.4Ghz N mode only on laptop). The laptop will connect at 150 Mbps to the 2.4Ghz channel of the main router in the basement. I don't see a way to adjust the wireless settings while the router is in repeater mode?
Will introducing the PCE-AC68 into this setup slow the link speed between the the routers?

Thanks.

Factory firmware is limited in options. What you can do, is install Kong DD-WRT firmware on both routers. Link both routers via 5Ghz band, then have both routers transmit 2.4Ghz band to clients.

You will have full control on both wifi bands settings, with out the limitations of factory firmware.

This is how i have two AC68 routers set up and it works really well. Far better then Asus based firmwares.

Ok, I'll look into that. I installed Merlin on the main router but haven't messed with the second one yet. Do you know if Merlin also improves the options? If not, I'll give Kong DD-WRT a try.
