Ubiquiti Pro Max 16 12x1G 4x2.5G 180W L3 Information please

Notconnected

Occasional Visitor
Hi everyone.
I am thinking of purchasing this switch Ubiquiti Pro Max 16 12x1G 4x2.5G 180W L3
And I have a few questions.

Can I login to configure this switch via a browser and ethernet cable, without having to use the internet, cloud apps, or apps that run on a phone.

Also, can it do inter vlan linking.

I am no good at networking, this will be my attempt at setting up a home network and finding cheap
enough Level 3 devices is not easy.
I want vlans to separate my devices into groups. I need some 2.5gig connections, which this switch has
four off, and two more if I use the SFT+ connections.
Am I right in thinking this switch can provide this.

Do I need a buy a lisence every year to make this switch work.
Can I connct this switch to a router and have internet access.
Can I use this switch directly to access the internet, via a wireless adapter plugged in and bridged to a phone or a WiFi Router.

Sorry for all the stupid question but I have never done this before.

Also, can the lights be turned off, I do not like them other than for diagnostics then out with them if possible

This switch is not too long out, but long enough for people to have it in their use, look forward to hearing your opinions, thanks.

Or would this be a better option, it has a fan though,

Not familiar with this specific product, but L3 switch can do VLANs, inter-VLAN routing, provide DHCP servers, etc. It can run the entire LAN. What it needs is a Gateway to Internet with firewall on it. I would suggest getting Ubiquiti Gateway with built-in Controller so everything is on single control board. No online account (opens additional options though) or annual subscriptions required (optional SyberSecure rules for IDS available). Depending on the ISP speed the options are UCG-Ultra (Gigabit), UCG-Max (2.5GbE) and UCG-Fiber (up to 10GbE, 5Gbps with IDS). They are not expensive devices. If you add Ubiquiti Access Points, Cameras, Access devices, etc. - they will all integrate into the UniFi system on the same control board.

Does it have stand-alone mode with all the options you require - I don't know. Is it fully supported by UniFi Network Controller - yes. Is it needed for a small network - perhaps not. Proper type UniFi Gateway can do all of the above with cheaper UniFi switch.

Thank you for posting.
If I understand correctly, then I need another device in order to connect this switch to the internet, I just can't connect it to the router I already have.
If this is the case then I won't be buying it. And having an account to open up more options is not going to fly either, seems like a lot of tracking going on / linking people to devices, screw that.
I know of no other switches that can not just connect to a router and work, so this is just another method of tying people to a manufacturer, apple come to mind with their walled garden.

You can, but I don't know what configuration options this switch has without UniFi Network Controller.

There is no other way to get push notifications about the status of your system. Online account is optional.

screw that

I run 3x connected home UniFi systems currently with single cloud account. UniFi is the Apple in networking, founded by an ex-Apple engineer. If you are not into Apple-like products - look somewhere else. There is something for everyone on the market. 🤷‍♂️

Already on it.

If this thread is somehow related to your previous one here:

... you don't need this type of switch at all. Don't overpay for hardware.

I have a small POE smart switch, but it is not big enough, I don't want to keep two running so was going to upgrade so I can add more IP cameras, I want a backup set of IP cameras that I can access from close to my property, a Nass, and some other SBC projects on another vlan.Jus

I am trying to find low power consumption devices so I can run during power outages, security cameras especially as there is usually no phones to worry about either, I have another form of comms for power outs.

The switch above requires UniFi Network application. Enterlighting can be dimmed or disabled. In case you want to go with UniFi you need this USW-Pro-Max-16-PoE + perhaps UCG-Max. You get Gateway, Controller and Switch for $600 and single control dashboard with somewhat user-friendly interface. The Gateway itself can do what you want with the Switch in L2 mode. Good luck!

Thanks @Tech9 , I will look into the USG, it take a bit of decyphering to determine what product is what using their terminology, I will google the devices you mentioned,.

If the budget is enough you may want to go fancy with rack mount devices:

I believe desktop style Gateway is good enough, for GbE and 2.5GbE WAN:

About your privacy, security, ongoing costs concerns, etc.:

The above can be setup and managed locally, cloud account is optional, analytics are optional, no hidden annual subscription fees, free IDS rules in 36 categories included and updated daily (Suricata based), ad-blocking included with local blocklist (AdGuard based), content filtering included (using CleanBrowsing filters), per App filtering available (using IDS engine), encrypted DNS available with presets (DNS-over-HTTPS), automatic DNS interception and redirection when filtering/ad-blocking is enabled. Everything users usually want is built-in including QoS options (traditional, adaptive), Multi-WAN, detailed per device traffic monitoring, etc.

The "I am no good at networking" situation may be an issue. I still believe this is overkill for your needs, but single pane of glass and popular system gives you a chance to get going faster. UniFi has adequate documentation online, good support forum, relatively self-explanatory UI with built-in help and many videos how to do things available online. Gives you better chance to learn and do what you need following examples and on a single dashboard. If you go mix-and-match route it will be challenge.
