Unable to check for updates from the web GUI

When I check for firmware updates from the asusrouter.com site after logging in to my router, I get this message:

The router cannot connect to ASUS server to check for the firmware update. Please download the latest firmware from ASUS Product Support Site and do manually upgrade

If I check for updates from the mobile app, it works fine.

Any ideas what may be causing this?

What firmware is the router currently running?
Can the router ping upstream locations?

3.0.0.6.102_38961

I just did a factory reset, same thing

how do I check that?
If the stock Asus firmware doesn't have Network Tools page (with a ping feature) like the Asus Merlin firmware does; then enable SSH on the router, then connect to the router using SSH and issue the ping website command (ex: ping www.google.com).

Update servers perhaps temporarily down. Try again later or just update manually if new firmware is available. No need to do anything else.

Stock firmware has those tools.

I've had the issue with unable to contact the update server occasionaly on both, the RT-AX86U, and the BE92U (when I had it), and the issue usually fixes itself with a few minutes, or a couple of hours. So, it's usually just temporary.

This is what I got:
If you typed in the word "ping" into the Target field, don't. Just select a target from the list and hit the Diagnose button. Other suggestions, reboot the router if you haven't done so already. If having DNS issues, check the router's WAN DNS settings and change the DNS server values to your ISP DNS servers as a troubleshooting test. Are you having any other issues with the router resolving DNS requests or accessing websites?

As others indicated, could be an issue on Asus's end with their system not being reachable, wait a few hours (or a day) and try the firmware check again.

So I changed the DNS from NextDNS to my ISP's default and rebooted the router, same result even though the Ping was fine

@bennor

A new firmware was just released (3.0.0.6.102_38962). I updated my routers and now the automatic update check works and no longer throws that message so it was probably something wrong with that firmware.

Had RT-AX86U for little over 3 years - with 2 FW versions it froze, some time after the update, in searching for updates and told none was available- even when there was a newer FW. First time took some time before noticed, but after that been also checking asus www-site of newest FW... And both times when I manually loaded the new FW the problem solved and then it again successfully found next update...

I’m get this on my RT-AX88U Pro running firmware 102_33352 but it’s not all the time. Happens with the mobile app as well. Sometimes the query works fine and the check completes. Other times the error. 🤷‍♂️

It’s intermittent and leads me to believe it’s something on the Asus end.
