USB-AC56 and Etron USB controller problems?

TwistedKestrel

New Around Here
Hi all,

I was wondering if there was anyone here that used the same hardware combination as me (ASUS USB-AC56 and an Etron USB controller, specifically in my case an EJ168A). The fault here probably lies with the USB controller, but I feel like these problems were introduced in one of the more recent AC56 driver updates as I feel like I've only been experiencing them for a few months. This is all running on Windows 7 x64.

If I plug the AC56 into a USB 3.0 port, then it seems randomly there will be a problem with the adapter going into/out of a low power state. Usually what will happen is the LED on the adapter will stop blinking (will be stuck on or off) and I may or may not have network connectivity. If I unplug the adapter at this point, the machine will instantly crash. If I shutdown or restart the computer, it will go through the motions but will get stuck at the final screen ("Shutting down your computer"). Only recently did I suspect the USB controller (known to have other problems, e.g. xHCI streams is completely broken) and tried plugging it into a USB 2.0 port. I haven't had the problems reoccur since. I guess I can live with it, but USB 3.0 was one of the selling points for me when I bought the AC56.

I'm looking for other people's experiences on this because I have had this computer & adapter for a while and have only been experiencing these issues relatively recently.

Likely a driver issue with the Etron card - on a more recent device (Asus X200ca win8/win10) with Intel's xHCI implementation, it seems to be more stable.

No real change in performance with the USB-AC56 between USB2 and USB3, at least not in my first hand experience...
