Thanks for the review Colin, this morning while the wife was busy I figured I could trash the router and get it running again before she sat down to the news.
I ssh'd in and found what I thought was the smb.conf file in the etc directory. I added the lines suggested by the OpenVPN gang;
hosts allow = 192.168.50.0/24 10.8.0.0/24 127.0.0.1
interfaces = 192.168.50.0/24 10.8.0.0/24
I typed it out to make sure I didn't mangle it and all was fine. I stopped and started samba, no joy. I retyped the smb.conf file and sure enough the updates were gone.
With that, unless there is another hack via the OprnVPN advanced custom configuration, this router is a gonner.
Even if Asus came to me and said "It will be fixed in the next release" I would unload it.
Thanks everyone for the support! I learned a bit and actually used my linux subsystem for something besides messing around with C once in a while.
