is anyone using a usb fan on their ac68u to keep it cool? I saw a post awhile ago can cant remember what they used 2 cool the router via usb fan... I searched and did not find anything TIA

somebody posted a guide around here for cutting your own using an existing usb cable and a case fan. pretty much all you need to do is splice the red wires and the black wires together. i've made a few in the past; currently using one to cool an xbox360

I am using this fan

http://www.staples.com/Deli-USB-Powered-Personal-Desk-Fan/product_219634

on an RT-AC56U and it has brought the temps from

2.4GHz 5GHz CPU
60C 60C 84C

To

2.4GHz 5GHz CPU
40C 40C 50C

But after reading a few posts by RMerlin, I may remove it (next time I'm there).

Some doc's indicate that the 'high' end may be 130C for these SOC's.

Many Broadcom SoCs can hit up to 130C, but that doesn't mean this particular chip does (nor any of its surrounding chips).

When I posted this, I only wanted to point out that 70-80C isn't that hot - some people were convinced that 80C meant their chip was about to melt.

RMerlin, sorry I didn't mean to imply otherwise.

Thank you for the clarification though.

Fan stand

I started with Thermaltake variable speed usb desk fan that I already had. I disassembled it and made a wooden stand for the router which incorporates the fan and the metal grills that came with it.

I don't really think this is necessary, as I never saw temps over 60c on my router even on hot summer days. But I already had the fan and other materials available so made one up just to see the result.

It typically lowers the temps by 8-10 degrees running at about half-speed. It does better than that at full speed, but at full speed it is noisy enough to be bothersome if you are anywhere near the router.

Of course it also uses up one of the router's two USB ports, but you could always plug it into a cheap USB power adapter instead of the router if you need the second USB port.

Had to comment on your handy work. Nice job clean looks like it was store bought. :D. You all know if you use the router stand so the router is vertical heat build up is not really an issue.

Thanks! :D

Oddly, that has not been my experience. I didn't see a any real difference in temps between horizontal and the "almost vertical" orientation using the Asus stand.

But I have seen a lot of variation between different units of the same model. I have attached a quick chart of temps from two N66U's. Note that one is in a much cooler room, is vertical, and has 0 clients connected to 5G band, yet is showing a higher 5G radio temp than the N66U in the warmer room, sitting horizontal, with 4 active 5G clients. (Note: The fan shown in previous posts was NOT running before or during these measurements.)

It seems odd that the 5G chip is hotter in the N66U that is vertical, is located in a much cooler room, and has no 5G clients connected. My only guess is that there are just manufacturing differences between the chips themselves, or the thermocouples, or how the heat sinks are installed that account for the reported variation.

I post all this just for "interest". As I said in previous post, I have never seen any temps on my personal N66U's that worry me. :)
